The figure of the measurer is inseparably tied to the modern cultural tradition, particularly from the 19th century onwards. A male figure moves through the landscape, and on his back lies the “weight” of the precise measurement of reality. One of the ways in which photography became historically most useful was as a tool of scientific measurement, where it was to ensure the desired precision and objectivity. Measurement, often aided by photographic technologies, thus plays an essential role in modernity and bears a similar load. The world must first be measured so that it can be cut up and sold.

The artists selected for the current exhibition each relate to this process of measurement in a different manner, just like each of them has a different way of coming to terms with the tradition of photographic depiction. In his series of photographs, Benedek Regős accentuates the optical connections between photography and Euclidian geometry. He follows the geodeticists of today in capturing the signs that their measurements leave behind both temporarily and permanently. The work of Jan Šerých makes use of a machine mapping technique which the artist empties of its original meaning (and thus its potential for convertibility) so that it might create for him the abstracted pattern so typical of Šerých’s work. The pieces by Jakub Valenta then move even further away from classical photography, entering the digital environment, another layer of the quantifiable world. Valenta disrupts the quality of precise measurements or machine calculations with his tables, graphs, and diagrams, which have the appearance of working within the framework of the well known measurable and marketable system, but their intentional hyperbole turns them against themselves, diverting their original meanings.

Benedek Regős’ exhibition Angle and Distance I, the first solo presentation of his ongoing project of the same name, attempts to evoke and explore the parallel motifs between surveying, mapping, and the nature of photography.

We have always had the intention to explore and survey the Earth trying to integrate it’s otherwise hardly organizable surface into different geometric structures and geographical networks in which reference points and boundaries necessary for our lives can be designated. These systems also provide the framework of land surveying, during which the collected data is transformed into decodable visual signs and maps, so that they can help and influence everyday decisions as coherent and comprehensive information.

This process of abstraction, the thinking in abstract space, is based on Euclidean geometry, that has defined our worldview since ancient times. Angle and distance are two basic types of measurement of this geometry, that make it possible to determine the coordinates of any point in space based on the principle of triangulation. Triangulation (and trigonometry in a broader sense) is particularly interesting in the context of photography because, in addition to being the basis of surveying, geodesy (and thus cartography), it also plays an important role in optical imaging. The fact that we rely on maps and photographs as accurate and authentic source of information in everyday life is essentially due to the direct or indirect geometric nature of their origin.

The exhibited images refer to various aspects of the topic. On the one hand, they reflect on the phases of land surveying and mapping workflows (aims, applied tools, technologies, practices and the person performing them), and on the other hand, on the pictoral output of these efforts, and their mode of action (on the operation of signs and sign systems that transmit data, and on the paradox between the technical imaging that exclude the human factor and the individual decisions behind them).

A 'Fázisok' az FKSE bemutatkozó kiállításon
'Phases' will be exhibited at "kraft,werk - FKSE debut show"

Az FKSE-be 2018-ban felvett új tagok ezúttal egy olyan bemutatkozó kiállítást hoznak létre, amelyben nem a már elkészült munkák kerülnek a középpontba, hanem a munkafolyamatokra, alkotói fázisokra helyeződik a hangsúly, arra hogyan is épül fel egy adott projekt. A kiállításon többnyire a kész művek helyett a tervek, ötletek, vázlatok, eltérő gondolkodásmódok kerülnének előtérbe: egy épp aktuálisan zajló kutatás és tervezés kezdetétől a legutóbbi munka hátteréig vagy akár végeredményéig. A kiállítás célja, hogy a különféle alkotói folyamatok és művészi gondolkodásmódok bemutatásán keresztül adjon képet az FKSE legújabb tagjairól, amely akár többet is elárulhat egy-egy művész praxisáról mint egy elkészült, lezárt munka. A vázlatokhoz, tervekhez, alakuló projekthez hasonló a mindig változó, bővülő portfólió műfaja is: így a kiállítás záróeseményeként egy nyilvános portfóliókonzultációt szervezünk, ahol bárkinek lehetősége lesz egy “villámrandi” keretében a művészekkel beszélgetni.

Solo show 'White Balance' opens on 4th April

Regős Benedek munkái a reprodukciós fényképezés lényeges aspektusaira reflektálnak. Kiindulási pontja az a tény, hogy művészettörténeti ismereteinknek csak kis része épül személyes tapasztalatra. Bár manapság – elődeink lehetőségeihez képest – könnyebben utazhatunk bárhová, a fényképezés médiumának megjelenése végtelenül leegyszerűsítette és bárki számára lehetővé tette a különböző korok mestermunkáinak megismerését. A fotó szerepe tehát művészettörténeti tudásunk elsajátításában kulcsfontosságú.

The publication, Pramen 2008 – 2016 / The Studio of Photography Catalogue, follows the period of pedagogical work by Aleksandra Vajd and Hynek Alt at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague. It chronicles their work from 2008 to 2016 and on to the present. The publication’s basic strategy is reverse reviews of artistic and atelier archives and to provide new interpretations of unused, unfinished or perhaps only conceived, but not realized, projects, collections and student or workshop graduate ideas.

Az Until Titled című kiállítást a Kaposvári Egyetem Fotográfia szak egykori hallgatói 2015-ben mutatták be a pozsonyi OFF Fesztivál keretében, miután Interventions című kiállításukkal megnyerték az előző évi fesztivál fődíját, az ON Awardot. Az Interventions-t 2015 januárjában Budapesten, a MONO Art & Designban is láthatták az érdeklődők, viszont az Until Titled itthon, a Hegyvidék Galériában kerül először bemutatásra.

A kiállításon szereplő munkák a 2015-ös fesztivál „interpret’art” tematikájára reflektálnak; a műalkotások befogadásának, létrejöttének, utóéletének, újradolgozásának és értelmezésének kérdéskörét járják körül.

The exhibition is a showcase of a diverse range of work from emerging and early career artists and photographers. Selections have been made through an open submission process, which attracted entries from artists based both locally and internationally. A section of this exhibition will also focus on a recent body of work and publication created by photography students from the Royal College of Art, the Hague studying under Corinne Noordenbos, developed during a recent week long intensive trip to Belfast. Join us for our Belfast Photo Fringe launch evening on Tuesday 2 June from 6 – 8pm for drinks and music provided by ‘Touch Sensitive Records’.
